THE CONDEMNED (detail)
All the drama and scenic representation is present in this fresco.
There is a perfect unity in this work but the single episodes have their own vitality.
It seems important to stress how the same woman depicted in the scene of the Anti-Christ as she takes the money for the usurer, is portrayed here differently riding a winged devil, crushed by another, strangled with a lace. Being the only woman amongst the condemned, she represents the symbol of the prostitute in the Revelation, the corrupted city of Babylon, symbol of all the prostitution and obscenities of the world.
According to tradition, this figure was represented by Signorelli as a woman who refused his love. The fresco
represents in a dramatic way all the desperation of the condemned, persecuted and tortured by the devils and is portrayed as a mass of flesh, muscles and bodies prostrated by pain.

In quest’affresco ritorna il dramma e la rappresentazione scenografica.
Anche in questa scena, dove è perfettamente raggiunta l’unità d’insieme, i singoli episodi vivono di vita propria. Sembra importante sottolineare come la stessa donna, raffigurata nella scena dell’Anticristo mentre prende i soldi dall’usuraio, venga qui raffigurata diverse volte: in groppa ad un demonio alato, stritolata dalla morsa di un altro, strangolata con un laccio. Essendo l’unica donna ritratta tra i dannati rappresenta il simbolo della meretrice dell’Apocalisse, la città corrotta di Babilonia, simbolo di tutte le prostituzioni e le oscenità del mondo.
Secondo la tradizione, questa figura fu rappresentata dal Signorelli con le sembianze di una donna che rifiutò il suo amore.
L’affresco rappresenta in modo drammatico la disperazione dei dannati, perseguiti e torturati dai demoni e raffigurati come un ammasso di carni, muscoli e corpi straziati dal dolore.
