THE END OF THE WORLD
This scene occupies the great entrance arch to the chapel. Signorelli used the large space by dividing the scene into two distinct parts at the sides of the arch.
Sibilla reading a book of prophesies announces the imminent cataclysm and the prophet Ezechiel (the person wearing a turban) points to the warning signs: the disappearing stars, the red moon and the grey or black sun.
Above to the left are the devils spitting fire on the men who try to flee and lower down are the deranged women trying to protect their children.
The figures at the forefront are painted with tight and highly coloured clothes pointing out their bodies. This fact seems almost an allusion to the immoral life of the real world.
This marvellous painting, of evident violence, shows an equilibrium almost at the edge of the real world and the scenery of a great performance.

LA FINE DEL MONDO
Questa scena occupa il grande arco d’ingresso della cappella. Lo spazio esiguo della superficie da dipingere è risolto dal Signorelli dividendo la scena in due settori distinti ai lati dell’arco.
La Sibilla, sfogliando un libro di profezie, annuncia l’imminente cataclisma e il profeta Ezechiele (il personaggio raffigurato col turbante) indica i segni premonitori: gli astri che si oscurano, la luna rossa, il sole grigio e nero.
In alto a sinistra si vedono i diavoli che sputano fuoco sull’umanità che, invano, tenta di scappare e, più in basso, le donne sconvolte che stringono al petto i loro figli cercando di proteggerli.
I personaggi in primo piano sono raffigurati con vesti attillate e coloratissime che mettono in evidenza le forme del corpo. Questo fatto sembra quasi un’allusione alla vita immorale e corrotta degli uomini.
Questo fantastico dipinto, di evidente violenza, mostra un equilibrio quasi al limite tra il mondo reale e la scenografia di un grande spettacolo.
